In early 1981, a group of about 15 people gathered together in a
local house to encourage one another, study God's Word, and learn more
about being fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.
Leading this group was Pastor Terry Calkin, a man with a vision to
see the Gospel spread in this city, this country, and taken to the
nations.
The exciting growth of the group led them to search for alternative
meeting places, and in March 1981 public services began at various
venues throughout the central Auckland area. By the end of that same
year, the congregation had grown to over 100 people.
During 1983, it became evident that the church would need to
establish their own building. The Greenlane motorway interchange area
was placed on the hearts of the leadership team and the church family.
Marewa Road was surveyed, and immediately the church secured two outer
edge properties, and over the next four years they acquired the
properties within these first two.
Early 1988 saw the beginning of building construction, and by
September 1988, Greenlane Christian Centre was opened. Since that time,
the church has seen continous and consistent growth within its
leadership team and church community. A number of ministries have been
established; youth ministries, cell ministries, various missions and
church planting projects, overseas orphanages and Bible schools, and
Greenlane's own Bible College.
If there is one thing that Pastor Terry is passionate about, it's
seeing people restored in their relationship with God, becoming fully
devoted followers of Jesus, and embracing all that God has for them.
"The three basic needs of humankind are the needs for security,
self-worth and significance. It's only in a relationship with Jesus
Christ that these needs can be met, and what a privilege it is to
introduce people to the One who makes the difference."
